BDO full form Block Development Officer ( Block Development Officeris). In Hindi it is called the Development Block Officer . The post of BDO is the administrative post which comes under Group-2. Recruitment to Block Development Officer posts is done by the Public Service Commission of the respective states. Usually there is a direct recruitment on the post of BDO for which the State Public Service Commission is done by the States. These posts are done on the basis of recruitment.

Candidates for the post of BDO are selected on the basis of written examination and interview. This is accomplished in three stages -
- Preliminary exam
- Main exam
- Interview
Preliminary exam
First written test is conducted. The written examination is conducted by the Public Service Commission.
The preliminary examination consists of two papers. The time of both the papers is two hours. Each paper carries 200 marks.
Paper (1) General Studies (Ⅰ) - 150 questions, which is 200 marks.
Paper (2) General Studies (Ⅱ) - 100 questions, which is of 200 marks.
Note - For Paper (2) General Studies (Ⅱ) it is mandatory for all candidates to get minimum 33% marks.
Main exam
After passing the preliminary examination you are included in the main examination. In this examination, candidates have to choose general Hindi, essay, general studies and an elective subject.
Paper No (2) Essay (I) - 150 Marks, Time (3 hours)
General Studies (General Studies) of A4 paper are -
Paper No (3) General Studies (I) - 200 marks, Time (3 hours)
Paper No (4) General Studies (ⅠⅠ) - 200 marks, Time (3 hours)
Paper No (5) General Studies (ⅠⅠⅠ) - 200 marks, Time (3 hours)
Paper No (6) General Studies (IV) - 200 marks, Time (3 hours)
The elective or optional subject is one, which can be chosen by the candidates from the optional subject given in the syllabus of the main examination, according to their wish, there are 2 papers -
Paper No (7) Optional Subject (I) - 200 marks, Time (3 hours)
Paper No (8) Optional Subject (II) - 200 marks, Time (3 hours)
Main Examination ( Main Examination ) 1500 Marks + Personality Test (Interview) 100 Marks = Total Marks = 1600 Marks
Personality Test (Interview) -
Candidates who have qualified in the main examination and appear in the merit list are called for personality test . Personality test ( interview) 100 points is. In this process, many types of questions are asked from the candidates. A merit list is then issued by the Public Service Commission. According to this merit list, the selected candidates are appointed as Block Development Officer or Block Development Officer.

What is the function of BDO?
BDO is responsible for all the works related to rural development schemes like old age pension scheme, housing, agricultural schemes, public distribution system etc. at block level.
2. BDO has to cooperate with various officials of state and central government in the implementation of the works and policies being done at the block level.
3. BDO executes out all the contract letters and papers on behalf of the Panchayat Samiti in which the approval of the (appropriate authority) can be obtained.
4. The BDO withdraws money from the Panchayat Samiti fund and provides money to the Panchayats and investigates the irregularities in the audit of the Panchayat Samiti's account and takes appropriate action for them in case of a disturbance.
5. Implements the instructions of the higher officer.
6. Listens to all development related complaints and makes plans for their desired redressal.
7. BDO establishes coordination with Panchayati Raj institutions of the state.
